Large format tiles – what to know about this current design trend
Date: 11-05-2021Large format tiles are one of the hottest design trends right now. Explore their benefits and what to consider when install large format tiles.
The Underrated Benefits of Tile Levelling Systems
Every tile and stone contractor are aware that their tools are the very lifeblood of their business. A professional tiler will always have diamond blades, tile cutters, hole cutters and tile spaces in their toolkit. But not every tiler is equipped with tile levelling systems.
Many tiling professionals believe that they don’t need tile levelling systems to produce quality tile work. This might have been true years ago when tiles were 300x300, 200x200 or the occasional 600x600 but times have changed. With new tile styles and sizes available in the market, sometimes clients want to install tiles in large format such as 300x600, 1200x200 or 1800x230. The size of these tiles and the manufacturing processes of modern tile materials such as porcelain inherently create curves or bows, otherwise known as lippage.
What is Lippage?
Lippage occurs when tiles are not laid to a uniform level on the floor or wall, which means one tile is higher than the other. This is usually a result of tile warpage, uneven spacing between the tiles, grout lines or differences in tile thickness. Warpage is especially frequent in large-format tiles and kiln-fired clay products. It is also common in many modern tiles, particularly rectangle-shaped ones with long-to-short side ratios.
While a floor with up to 3mm lippage may be unnoticeable and harmless, excessive lippage can affect the integrity of the tile installation and become dangerous. Severe lippage creates trip hazards and the problem can get worse over time due to moisture, settling or cracked tiles.
Prevent Lippage – the benefits of Tile Levelling Systems
Utilising a tile levelling system when installing wall or floor tiles is a foolproof way of ensuring your products are lippage-free upon installation. A complete tile levelling system typically consists of clips wedgesthat work together to prevent the tiles from moving while the compound is setting. Tile levelling systems guarantee that there will be no differences in elevation between the edges of adjacent tiles by clamping the edges of the tiles together and bringing them into an even plane. You can use them on large-format tiles, thin tiles, rectified floor tiles as well as rectified wall tiles.
Remember, not only amateurs need tile levelling systems. The systems are not a substitute for skills, they’re handy tools that help professional tilers produce superior installation jobs in an efficient and effective manner.
With tile levelling systems, you virtually eliminate lippage and reduce callbacks due to poor tile installation.
Achieve Smooth and Even Tiles with Amark Group
At Amark Group, we have a well-stocked inventory of tile levelling systems that make levelling quick, simple and effective.
Our Align It Clip and Align It Wedge was ergonomically developed to help achieve a perfect installation for all tile covered surfaces.
The clips align, space and hold together stone, marble and porcelain tiles while the wedges level the tiles. They work together to ensure that the tile surface is seamless and they also prevent warping as the adhesive or thin-set cures. We also carry levelling pliers made with comfort, efficiency and ease of use in mind.
